MIMIC: the Mental Immunity to Misinformation Campaign

One of the most important tests faced by today’s students won’t occur in a quiet room with a proctor keeping time. Their biggest challenge will begin the moment they pull out their phones and dive into the swell of clickbait, social media-fueled misinformation, and other forms of manipulative messaging.

Through MIMIC, CIRCE plans to create and distribute a suite of instructional tools that empower educators to deliver impactful, high-engagement “misinformation literacy” lessons. To this end, we will:

  1. Mine the latest research for insights about what works;
  2. Design fun, project-based learning activities for use in elementary, middle, and high school classrooms;
  3. Afford teachers simple, easily implemented lesson plans;
  4. Provide colorful and engaging learning materials; and
  5. Guide teachers on the art of conducting the kind of discussions that build “deep” mental resilience.

For example, a classroom exercise in which students work in groups to design sneaky disinformation campaigns (followed, of course, by candid discussion of how these work, why they often fool people, and how to protect oneself) turns out to be a great way to help them become more discriminating consumers of information.

We're excited to share this work with you.
